but what can we do to make something out of our nothingness? you may say, wow, i never have ANYTHING to do in the summer... it's terrible. in fact, your face may look a little bit like this...

well i'm here to save the day. no, i'm not going to solve any case of boredom there is on the planet, but i'm here to give you a few possible solutions to make something out of nothing.
1.) sit in the sun.
this works for me. instant happiness booster. whenever i need a break, i just go outside and soak up some rays and put my headphones in my ears. i listen to music that relaxes me, such as adele or needtobreathe. something that just eases my mind. then i just sit, relax, and soak in the warmth of the sunshine. of course, this only works on days when it isn't raining. well i don't worry about that it's sunny all the time where i live...when those days come, all i can say is... bask in the glow of your desk lamp? hahaha.
2.) read an old favorite, or find a new one!
when i read, it's like going into a different world. i know i know, not all of you bloggers out there like to read. even i am not the biggest fan of reading, but i REALLY like it when i find a series that i enjoy. so i suggest, if you don't like reading, find an old book you loved when you were a kid. relive the memories. your thoughts on the book may have changed now that you're older, and reality probably has kicked in enough for you, and maybe you'll find a different perspective on the book. or else, instead of finding an old favorite, find a new one! ask one of your book-lover pals (or if you don't have any, head to the library and find a librarian!) about a series that they enjoy. i always think that books are better if they have more than one, because you always want to find out what happens next and that makes you keep reading the following books in the series.
3.) let loose and use all lowercase letters.
like i'm doing now. no, it won't cure your boredom for all of eternity (or maybe not even a millisecond), but the words seem to flow better (well, in my opinion) when you use all lowercase. haha. so try it! i don't usually do this, but i'm likin' it and might just do it more often. what do you think? should i?
4.) ...that's embarrassing!
take out those old photo albums! yeah, i'm talking about those ones of you when you were little. the ones where you probably find at least one picture of you naked in a bathtub, sitting with your first dog, kissing your baby brother/sister, playing house with your baby dolls, taking your first spin with your training wheels, etc... i've found strange enjoyment out of looking at my old photos. looking at all of the fun and joy i had out of my kid years makes me happy. and i also have a good laugh at the embarrassing naked-baby-butt pictures..... awkward. ;)
5.) speak with a british accent.
or spanish. or german. or irish. just whatever accent. anything is fun. i could spend all day speaking in a british accent... especially if you're with a friend... is so much fun. you can laugh at each other and see who's better at it. and what's even better, if you're in town... people can stop and
6.) snappity snap snap.
yeah, take a pic! doesn't matter what camera you have. it could be worth $50 or $500. i personally enjoy taking pictures of people! it's really fun to have a photo shoot with your friends, or little sister... and if you don't have either of those... you could take one of your dog. just kidding, it sounds really mean if i said you don't have friends. which i'm SURE you do. i really didn't mean it in a harsh way. that would just be rude to say. :) but anyway, take a few pictures! dabble in photography! focus on the little things, or snapshots of the big things! and plus, it makes great blog material. ;)
7.) write the next great american novel.
self explanatory. haha. and if you do, please tell me about it and i will read it. :)
8.) go running.
i feel like a ton of people want to do this, but just never do. so, go do it! it'll make you feel tons better and you'll feel more confident because you'll be making your body healthier and happier too. so get motivated. your first run doesn't have to be long! start short, go running every night, and go a little longer each time! before long, you'll be running from your hometown all the way to china in no time! umm.. wait... whoops, forgot about that little obstacle called the ocean...
9.) redo your room.
first, you've gotta clean it. get all those dustbunnies out from under the bed. ;) sort out everything you want to keep and make a box for giving stuff to charity and such. after the cleaning part is done, then comes the fun! redecorating! it's surprising how much you can change up your room just with all the stuff you already own. it's so much fun. so take a picture of your room before, then snap one of the after. i'm sure it'll be fantastic! plus, now mom won't have to nag you about tidying up like she has been for the last three weeks! ;)
10.) commentpalooza.
did i just make up that word? yes, yes i did. if you're like me, you don't always go around reading every single blog you follow... of course, i follow hundreds... and it takes a while to comment on each one, obviously! but i challenge you, to go through your list of recent posts. take time to read every one. well not of course EVERY ONE of all existence of the time. but just look through your recent posts. comment on them. take time to get to know the authors. it makes people happy when they find comments on their posts. i know i am! so take time to love your followers and the blogs you follow. people will appreciate it. :)
anyway, i know this list is quite short and you may even find it boring, but i hope this helps you on a day when you're feeling BLAH. whatever you do, try to make something out of your nothing. and then, you'll feel accomplished. and if you're like me, feeling accomplished means you feel GOOD. :)

Haha, great post, Sophie! Oh, I could do the english accent thing all day, too.
ReplyDeleteoh i know what you mean about the whole lowercase-words-flowing-better thing! you don't have to press the 'shift' key every three words! i love looking through old photos and random things that we have in random boxes from years ago!:)
thanks for the comment on my blog, Sophie! your blog is adorable and this post has some great ideas that I'll have to keep in mind. :)

This post is gorgeous... partly because I love miscellaneous posts, but mainly because you're a great writer and you know exactly what to say. :) And your blog? -- It's adorable.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I totally agree with you -- speaking in a British accent is so much fun. Especially when people (here in England!!!) stare at you because your British accent isn't just like theirs. I know. Even when you speak in a British accent IN England they look at you. If you're wondering, yes -- I live in England, but I'm from Canada and lived in America all my life, except that two years in Canada.
keep up your wonderful blogging!
